Feb. 17–IRVING — A man was rescued by firefighters late Friday night after he drove into a giant utility hole.

Irving firefighters responded to the 40-foot nosedive of a crash just before 11 p.m. Friday. The man had driven his pickup truck through the fence that guarded the hole in the earth along the 800 block of West Oakdale Road, near MacArthur Blvd., north of Interstate 30.

The fire crews pulled the man out of the trench with a ladder truck. The driver’s rescue took less than an hour, according to a tweet from the fire department, but it was unclear how long the guy’s truck would be trapped down there.

Somehow the driver of the truck escaped with just minor injuries. Firefighters said the man, who has not been identified, did not see the fence barricade surrounding the hole.
